SEPTEMBER BEGINS WITH STATEWIDE JOB LOSS
Effects of Bush/Daniels led economy continue to worsen
INDIANAPOLIS - After another month of devastating job loss in August, September starts with four companies around the state laying off workers.
Today, PSC Metals announced it is shutting down its Secondary Plate Operation in northwest Indiana, laying off 108 workers. Driggs Farms of Indiana, an ice cream manufacturing and packaging plant in Decatur filed for bankruptcy, leaving 200 workers with an unknown future. Also, a subsidiary of Evansville-based American General Financial Services has released 17 employees due to the economic downturn as well AM General in Mishawaka which announced plans to lay off 80 workers at its Hummer H2 plant.
"These announcements are further proof that we need new leadership and a new approach to growing and retaining jobs in Indiana," said Democratic nominee for Governor Jill Long Thompson. "Our economy is failing and Hoosier families are hurting, yet Governor Daniels continues to do little to stop this downward spiral."
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, Indiana ranked second among all 50 states in the drop in employment from June to July. The same report found 17,800 fewer Hoosiers were employed during the same time frame. Another report by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court found that Indiana ranked fifth nationally for overall bankruptcies, second for business bankruptcy filings, and eighth for individual filings.
